What Is Crusher Run?
Crusher run (sometimes called "DGA" for dense-graded aggregate, or "57s with fines") is crushed limestone that includes the full mix of stone sizes from about 1 inch down to fine dust. The big and small particles together let it lock and compact tight when spread and run on.
Other names you'll hear locally: "road base," "QP," "crush-and-run," "ABC" (aggregate base course), or just "gravel."
What It's Used For
- Driveway driving surfaces — the most common use in McNairy County
- Driveway and road base under chip-seal, asphalt, or concrete
- Equipment pads for tractors, trailers, RVs, boats
- Mobile home setup pads and approaches
- Storage building & pole barn pads
- Walking paths that need to stay firm and not migrate
- Compaction base under concrete slabs and pavers
Why It's the Default Choice
Compared to clean stone like #57, crusher run has two big advantages: it packs, and it's more affordable per ton. The fines in crusher run fill the voids between the bigger stones when compacted, making a hard surface that doesn't migrate or rut. Clean stones like #57 stay loose and shift around — great for drainage, less great for trucks driving on them.
The tradeoff: crusher run holds water more than clean stone. For a driveway, that's fine — a properly crowned crusher run drive sheds water just fine. For French drains or septic drain field bedding, you want clean stone like #57 instead.
How It's Delivered
We deliver crusher run by the tri-axle load (about 20–22 tons) for bigger jobs, or by smaller dump truck (typically 8–14 tons) for tighter spots and smaller projects. For most driveways we can spread it directly with the truck or follow with a skid steer or box-blade. See delivery and spreading for more.
How Much Do You Need?
For coverage, figure 1 ton of crusher run covers about 80 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or about 100 sq ft at 1.5 inches. We do the math from your driveway or pad dimensions when you call.
How We Price It
Material cost plus delivery. The bigger the load, the lower the cost per ton (a tri-axle costs less per ton delivered than two small loads). Written quote before we deliver. See how our quotes work.
