What is #57 Stone?
#57 is crushed and washed limestone, mostly in the 1/2-inch to 1-inch range (about thumbnail to thumb size). It's clean — the fines have been screened or washed out — so it stays loose and water flows through it easily.
The "#57" comes from the AASHTO size spec. You'll also hear it called "57 stone," "57s," "septic rock," or just "the clean stone."
What is #2 Stone?
#2 is the bigger cousin of #57 — about 1.5 to 2.5 inches, also clean and washed. It's used where you need more strength under the surface: pad bases under driveway gravel, deep drainage trenches, heavy-equipment pads.
